Sandhill crane

Adults are almost entirely gray; in the breeding season, the plumage is usually heavily mottled, especially in migratory populations, becoming almost ochre. The crane has a red forehead, white cheeks and a long, dark, pointed beak. In flight, its long, dark legs drag and its long neck is held straight. Immature birds have reddish tops and gray bellies. Both sexes look alike. Size varies between subspecies. This crane often utters a clarion call reminiscent of a French "R roulé", which can be heard at great distances.
